Test your Metal! What kind is it?

When consumers go to purchase a high performance, truck exhaust sytem, they are often faced with a dilemma - what kind of exhaust system should I get?

Or more specifically, what type of metal do I want my exhaust system to be manufactured from? Well, here's an easy-t0-understand primer I found in the July 2007 issue of "Truck & SUV Performance and Accessory Retailing." The author is listed as Martin Barkey, CEO, MBRP Inc.

So, here are the three primary material grades used in aftermarket exhaust sytems and their relative benifits/shortcomings. Enjoy.

Aluminized Steel: Not Stainless

Aluminized steel is a heavy-gauge steel that has been offered as a solution for the cost-conscious customer. It is not a stainless-steel materal grade.

Aluminized steel is the ideal option for customers who require a solution that offers the best performance at a low price-point. It is also an option for those who reside in a geographical area where weather is typically dry and mild. When used in more demanding applications and extreme weather, this materal will show signs of wear and rust more quickly than stainless steel. Aluminized stainless usually carries a one-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer.

T409 Stainless

T409 stainless, also known as ferritic stainless, is probably the best-known and most popular grade of stainless available. T409 is a low-carbon steel that is at least 12-percent chromium. it is a rugged, durable, long-lasting material grade offering a variety of finishes from dull "mill" finish to a high-shine finish.

In extreme applications and harsh weather conditions, it can eventually show signs of wear, such as surface rust, but the core of this material will remain solid. It offers a high-value, attractive material selection at a more affordable price. This material grade usually carries between a 5- to 10-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer.

T304 Stainless

T304 stainless, also known as austenitic stainless, is generally the highest material grade used for exhaust sytems. It is an aircraft-quality, 16-gauge stainless containing 18-20 percent chromium and 8-10 percent nickel.

The material is highly durable and it will never rust. It is very attractive and, even after extended use, can be polished to a high-shine finish. It also has the lightest weight of any of the material grades because of its high chromium content.

T304 stainless is the perfect choice for vehicles that will be owned for an extended period of time and/or need to stand up to rugged use or challenging weather conditions. It's also the only choice for the truck or SUV owner who simply wants to very best or is using their vehicle as a show vehicle. T304 aftermarket exhaust systems automatically add to the value of the vehicle, and the appearance is exceptional.

Because it is the finest material grade available, T304 also has a higher price point. This material grade frequently carries a lifetime warranty, depending on the manufacturer.

And that's a wrap. So, how did you like your primer of exhaust system material grades? If you live in the northern United States (like me) and have to deal with lots of rain in the summer, and snow and ice(and salt) in the winter, then you definitely want to go with the T304. I mean, any other exhaust system will rust to pieces in a very short time.

At the other end of the spectrum, you fools down in Texas and Arizona are good to go with your standard Aluminized system. Dry, hot conditions are no problem for this metal and it holds up just fine for a long time.

V8 Chevrolet Colorado!

So, talk of a possible 5.3L V8 Chevy Colorado option has the whole automotive internet freaking out. That little baby will be the most powerful mid-size pickup, finally beating out the 5.9L Dodge Dakota R/T.

Now, keep in mind that the Dakota R/T is a full-on high performance truck. It's got a slightly lower stance, wider tires and different suspension components. The Colorado will probably have some upgraded components, but that's just to handle the big V8 and the onrush of torque and HP. It won't be flashy and high-performance. Or will it?

I bet a true Colorado SS V8 could smoke anything else out there. You put in a locking diff, some sticky tires and you're off to the races. This should be a truly impressive truck.

Cleveland Auto Show Part II - The Jeep Experience

In my last post, I talked about the Dodge experience at the Cleveland Auto Show. Now I'll outline what I experienced at the Jeep exhibit. It was awesome.

After the Dodge heart-attack-demo I sauntered over to the Jeep exhibit where a much more impressive driving course was set up. Only it was four times the size of the Dodge demo area and a little more engaging. Not only was there a course there for test rides but it was a really, really nice setup.

Basically, the idea is the same as the Dodge exhibit; you get a test ride in a vehicle. But instead of a short burst of straight-line acceleration, you are taken on some sort of pre-built off-road course. It’s great. The whole setup is built of really heavy-duty wood (timber?) and there is a thick layer of mulch covering the floor. Add a couple of trees and we’d have been out in the Alaskan frontier. As I typed before, a really nice setup.

Anyways, so you stand in line outside the barriers and wait your turn. When you get to the head of the line, you are ushered to a waiting Jeep vehicle. They had quite a few available and I may not remember them all, but there was a Grand Cherokee, a few Wrangler Rubicons, some new four door Wranglers and maybe a Liberty or two.

After buckling up, you are jostled around as the driver shows you the wheel articulation by driving over some large, oddly-spaced timbers, then you are bounced around as the ground clearance is demonstrated by driving over some obstacles of varying height.

Next is some sort of sideways ramp that you are driven over. This doesn’t sound or look very impressive, until you are inside the Jeep and you look to the sides and either see the floor or the ceiling. I think this was to demonstrate the Jeep’s ability to not flip over on its side and kill you. Plus one for Jeep.

After that was some sort of traction demonstration that we rolled over. Three of the vehicle’s four tires were set on these rollers while the fourth was left on hard pavement. So, when the driver stepped on the gas, the three tires on rollers got no traction. But due to the Jeep’s capabilities, the one tire that could get traction did. Again, kudos to Jeep.

The last two things were cool. Ok, one of them was cool. One area was to show us the water fording (driving through water) capabilities of the little Jeep. I think that there was 18 inches of water that we drove through. I wasn’t too impressed until I remembered that most cars couldn’t handle a 1/3rd of that depth. But forget that.

The coolest thing was a hill climb that our little-Jeep-that-could completed. I’d say that it was about fifteen feet high and the driver told me that the angle was thirty-five degrees. I don’t know what you’re picturing, but let me tell you, I would have needed stairs and/or a rope to climb this thing. The Jeep, however, didn’t seem to have a problem. As my eye-line rose towards the ceiling I could feel my body sinking further into the seat and I instinctively grabbed for the overhead bar. You could hear a distinct Tink-Tink-Tink as the change left my pockets and joined everybody else’s in the back of the Jeep. Looks like I don’t have to tip my driver…

Let me tell you, if I was in the market for a Dodge or Jeep vehicle, these exhibits would have sold me. Feeling the full onslaught of the Dodge Charger’s impressive acceleration and braking really brought that car out of the magazine pages and into reality. Having never thought about buying a Jeep, I could now see myself fording streams and climbing over hill and dale in pursuit of happiness. Thanks, folks, you done well.

The Cleveland Auto Show - I-X Center, Feb. 24 - Mar.4, 2007

Lemme tell you about the Dodge exhibit over at the Cleveland Auto Show. It was great. Here's kind of something I typed up about it for something else, but I'll use it here. Enjoy:

The smarties over at Dodge had an area set up where you get to ride in one of a few different cars (A Charger SRT8, a few Magnum SRT8s and a Jeep Nitro RT.)

Now notice that I said “ride-in.” You don’t actually get to drive the car (for safety and insurance reasons) but you do get to ride in it while a professional race-car driver launches it from 0 to 30 in about a half second.

Here’s how it goes: There is a decent sized rectangular area (50’ x 150’) with barricades around it. Inside the barricades is essentially an oval. The cars are lined up along one long side, where you stand in line. You wait your turn and then are greeted by some nice folks who safely usher you into the next available coach. You get in and are greeted by the driver as he or she instructs you to fasten your safety belt. Do this! The car is then gently pulled forward, passing under a safety gate and around one end of the oval. You are now on the opposite long side of the oval, facing a straightaway that is about 100’ long. At the far end is a pair of huge safety lights, one red, one green, lots of yellow caution tape, some orange cones and one very ominous looking barricade.

The safety light turns from red to green and the driver asks if you are ready. You give an affirmative answer and are rewarded with a vicious growl from the engine, a little tire chirp (traction control was on) and the satisfying feeling of being thrown back in your seat. Suddenly the lights, caution tape, cones and barricade all seem to come at you in full attack mode. I imagined the barricade saying to the cones, “Here’s my big chance, boys! I’m gonna snag me a Charger!”

But before the barricade gets his big break, the green light turns to red and the Dodge’s high-performance brake system is engaged. Again, you are rewarded. But this time you are launched forward against the seat belt as the car comes to a (very) healthy stop.

Another safety gate passes overhead as you casually round the next corner and line up along the first side again. Your doors are opened by the same valets from earlier and you are thanked for trying the Dodge Experience and ushered back out onto the show floor.

Was it awesome? Yes. Would I do it again? Yes. If I had the money, would I now be in the market for a Dodge Charger SRT8? You bet I would. Would I like a Dodge representative to loan me one for an extended test drive? Of course.

Jeep Cherokee SRT600

Wow!! The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT600 is crazy! It's made by Hennessey. Now, I don't know if this is the same Hennessey that makes the alcahol, but who cares? This thing is a beast. The company takes a stock SRT8 Grand Cherokee (Availabe in 6.1L HEMI or 5.7L HEMI) and then turbocharges that thing. What originally put out around 420 hp now melts the rubber with 620 hp.
This thing goes zero to 60 in only 3.7 Seconds!! That's faster than a Porsche 911! That's faster than a Corvetter! That's faster than Captain Planet!!

I just hope that there will be some awesome truck accessories available for this thing before too long...

Chevrolet Colorado Sweepstakes

Yowza! Those peeps over at Stylin' Concepts just gave away one of their sweepstakes trucks for 2006. Yes, I know that it is now 2007, but the sweepstakes was in 2006 and didn't end until some time in December. Well, the sweepstakes winner was there the other day to pick up her new truck.

If you don't know the full details about the truck, it is a fully customized 2006 Chevrolet Colorado. A Skyjacker suspension lift kit was installed, large off-road wheels and tires, and a big assortment of other truck accessories.

Wow, those guys over at Stylin' Concepts are really slick. They've got a whole section of their site devoted to press releases. Press releases? Why?

Let me tell you. Because press releases are how the world learns about things. Say you saw something cool on Yahoo's home page. Maybe it's a little story about some cool new gadget. Well, nobody would know about that cool little gadget if someone at that company hadn't issued a press release about it.

So, if you want to stay on top of all of the new truck accessories and new truck products, then you need to stay on top of the Truck Accessory Press Release section over at Stylin' Concepts.

Those jokers over at Stylin' Concepts are really starting to get their act together. As of today they are posting Customer Feedback right on their website. They also have feedback from some of their online customer profile people, Nate with his Yukon Denali, and Greg with his Sierra Hot Rod.

And don't forget about the videos that they are starting to do. They've got a whole article about their last truck show with videos. And, product videos and other things are starting to show up on Stylin' Concepts' YouTube page.

Oh, and there are a few other things happening around here. The Cleveland Federated Auto Parts Auto-Rama is coming up in a few months. Stylin' sent a photographer there last year to get some Auto-Rama coverage.

Those guys over at Stylin' Concepts are at it again! They've got a hot new bio on their articles page that talks about a really hot 2003 GMC Yukon Denali. Here's an excerpt:

The process begins with the Volant air intake system, where the incoming air stream is filtered through a high-flowing, conical style air filter and crammed past an Airaid Poweraid throttle body spacer. The clean air is then sucked into the Magnacharger supercharger where it is force-fed, in mass quantities, to each hungry, waiting cylinder. After a very violent explosion, the spent gasses are routed through stainless steel headers from Gibson and a dual 3" stainless exhaust system with high-flowing Magnaflow stainless mufflers.
But how can the factory transmission ever handle all of that power? It can't. Nate has outfitted his Denali with an FLT 4L60E Level 5 Transmission kit and a Precision Industries torque converter. The "Vigilante" series torque convertor uses a 3-disc clutch that puts plenty of squeeze on the cryogenically treated billet output shaft. A Trans Go HD-2 shift kit adds additional line pressure when necessary, and a Corvette transmission servo gives out the marching orders.
So don't get angry if Nate leaves your ride sitting at a stoplight in a cloud of burned tire and asphault smoke - you never had a chance. But don't worry, that doesn't happen too often. A much more likely occurrance would be the complete dismantling of your vehicle by the massive audio shockwave that the Denali's stereo system puts out.

Whoa! Stylin' Concepts now has a whole page on their site dedicated to performance truck hoods. There are cowl induction hoods for trucks, ran air hoods, heat extractor hoods, and old-school, muscle-car style shaker hoods! Woo-hoo! Hoods rule!

Oh, and you know what else rules? The "reaheat" button on your microwave. It's like the little friend I never knew I had. I usually just grab food out of the fridge and eat it cold like some caveman. But I was feeling a little squirrely last night and decided to try out some of the automatic cooking functions of my expensive microwave. I'll give you my opinion and it's only one word - Nice!

Bright and early for Truck Accessories

Whoa! What a killer weekend. I went to a rockin' concert on Friday night, another one on Saturday night, and some silliness happened yesterday. I can't go into too many details but I have to replace two slashed tires on my truck and there is a teenager somewhere in cleveland with a very badly broken hand and a broken nose. Maybe I'll call some local hospitals and see if anyone came in with those symptoms. Then I'll laugh because I win.

Young man, if you are reading this, don't set foot on my property again or there will be trouble. And you need trouble like you need a hole in the head. Capisce?

So, on to more awesome truck accessory related things. Uh, I've found this video that features an 05 Dakota with a flowmaster exhaust system. They don't say what the engine is, but I'm guessing that it's an R/T with the 5.9L. It sounds pretty mean.

There doesn't appear to be a ready-made Flowmaster exhaust system for this application, but the Flowmaster Super 40 series mufflers are available here.

Check it out. I've just invented the technology to put Youtube videos into my blog posts. I prayed to the Dark Lord and he came back with the information I needed.

So, here's our first video. It's a 1997-2003 Ford F150 stepside. He's got big wheels and a body kit. But mostly we're interested in his killer airbag setup. See, he's swapped out his stock suspension components for a custom air bag suspension. This allows him to let the air out of the bags and drag parts of his truck along the street. This video shows how that can be a problem sometimes. (Yes, you may have seen this before. It's been circulating around the 'net for a few years.)

What, you were expecting something else? A diamond ring, perhaps. Or some other stupid symbol. Ladies, I'm not here to mess around. You won't be getting diamonds from me, or jewelry. Those items are useless. I like function.

That's why I buy all of my lady friends the new Platinum Step Bars from Westin. The fancy chrome-plated stainless exterior begs to be polished while the stylish, black, non-slip step surface just screams, "Step on me!!"

That's what they're for. See, if I were to get you a diamond ring it would sit on your finger until you die and then my hard earned money would be in the ground, for eternity.

A nice set of nerf bars, on the other hand, will be used hard, really, really hard and keep on going. Especially if they're manufactured by the venerable Westin. They've really got their shit together over there.

Truck Accessories get going when the going is getting good.

Well, I opened this "new post" box with the intent of talking about truck accessories. Forget about that. I've come across something much, much more interesting: the new 4WheelDrive Hardware catalog.

These guys must have the worst timing of any catalog company, ever! They've dropped a sales catalog that makes fun of Steve Irwin (the public's most trusted animal expert.) two days after he died a horrible death. What the hell? You guys are a mess.

Obviously this catalog cover idea was thought of and quite possibly printed months ahead of time. The shipper probably dropped them in the mail two days before Mr. Irwin's untimely death. There was no way of knowing what would happen. Unless...

Perhaps a rival company knew of 4WheelDrive Hardware's intent to drop this Irwin-esque catalog and sabotaged them by offing Mr. Crock Hunta! Maybe there was a hired hand from AIM Industries inside of the stingray (or manta ray, who can tell the difference?).

Speaking of stingray, have you ever seen one of their faces? It's on the bottom of the damn thing and looks like a smiley face. It's f-ing terrifying.

I'm serious. Sea creatures scare the hell out of me. Land animals I understand. They've got legs that they walk on, heads on top of their bodies, some sort of "hands" and some sort of feet. But sea creatures...who the hell knows what's going on with them?

They've got tentacles (maybe testicles too. The only man brave enough to find out is now deceased.) But they've got appendages everywhere and armor and gills and lots of eyes and little flippers and various other forms of motion, legs, blow holes, uh...walking...swimming.

To tell you the truth, I don't know shit about sea life. All I know is that one time I was hanging out with Gramps down in Florida and he told me to go down by the water and stick my little 5-year old finger down into the sand. So I do.

Exactly one half-second later I feel as if my finger has been cut off. I yanked my wounded little finger out of the sand and there is a dreadful sea monster hanging from it. His horrible, tiny little claw was latched onto the end of my finger like a horrible little claw latched onto the end of my finger. Yeah, you guessed it, I screamed like a little girl.

I flailed my arms about like an idiot and the little monster let go and flew straight up into the air. It promptly landed at my feet and chased me around the beach for five whole minutes. Did dear old Grandpa help? No. Did the nice lady selling ice cream help? No.

Eventually a nice man ran over, picked up the little hell spawn and flung it back into the sea. "Be gone," he shouted! "I cast thee back where to whence thou came!" or something stupid like that. I don't remember, I was too little.

You know what doesn't suck? Truck accessories. Has a hood guard ever bitten you on the hand? Did your performance air intake system ever chase you around the beach and scare you to death? I didn't think so.

They've been nice to you, now be nice to them. There are many, many truck accessories that need a good home. They've been left on cold and lonely warehouse shelves for weeks at a time with no love. Please give to your local Truck Accessory Charity.

An open letter to truck accessories.

Truck Accessories,
I need to write you this letter as a confession. A confession of my love for you. Truck accessories, you've been with me in the best of times, and you were there in the worst of times.

Remember that road trip where we helped my dad's tired F150 squeeze out 22 MPG's? That was great. High Performance Air Intake system, you and your buddy, the dual exhaust system, really stepped up and took one for the team that day. You cleaned air and fed the Ford F-150's engine admirably.

Hood guard, you performed perfectly as well. Not a single bug hit the windshield. What about the time I accidentally drove through that mud puddle and you got dirty? I'm really sorry about that. I was being irresponsible and I apologise.

And my darling hood guard. Remember the time a rock hit you on the highway? You saved my life. The Dodge Ram in front of us didn't have the appropriate mud flaps installed and his rear tire kicked up the rock. That rock could have hit the hood or windshield. The windshield might have shattered and I would have lost control of my Silverado and flipped over and died. If only that driver loved accessorizing his Dodge truck as much as we do.

But don't fear, brave little hood shield. For you came with a lifetime warranty. All I had to do was call the retailer where I purchased you and they replaced you, no questions asked.

And I can't forget my little buddies, my carpeted floor mats. You guys are great. You protect my truck's factory carpet from the elements. Your raised lip traps dirt and water. Your thick, lush pile is comfortable for my feet. Your factory colors help you fit in perfectly. And the fact that you are custom fit for my truck, it makes me love you that much more.

Truck accessories, I can't believe that I'm actually telling you all this. I'm usually so shy. But I've been drinking and I have some thoughts to get off of my chest. Well, I had some thoughts, but they're gone now. You know...cause of the drinking.

Truck Accessories - Not hard to find.

Why, oh why are there so many stock-looking trucks on the road these days? I mean, is it really that hard to call up Stylin' Concepts or JC Whitney and get an EGR Hood Guard?

Nobody should have to see stock trucks rolling around. It's a disgrace. That's why people don't run around naked. When I go out in public, I have the common decency to wear clothing. I don't want to offend anyone by having my naughty parts flopping all over the place. And neither should your truck.

A naked truck hood is a terrible thing to waste. You should install a hood guard onto the hood of your truck. Or if you prefer, just replace it with a hot fiberglass hood. It'll have scoops and air vents and be much more attractive than a hood with no truck accessories.

And what about shoes? Your truck's wheels and tires are like its shoes. Do you walk around barefoot and nasty-looking like Nicole Richie? I didn't think so. So hook your truck up with some nice wheels and tires.

What about the engine compartment, you know, the "heart" of your truck. Have you taken care of it with a nice air intake system? What about a performance exhaust system? Those are some of the first things you're going to want to do. You'll get some extra ponies out of your stock engine as well as pick up some MPGs.

Get away from that naked truck and put some hot truck accessories on it!

Yay, my chubby little cousin Jackson is in town. (Yes, my aunt Linda named him "Jackson") He's a little developmentally challenged, but a really good kid. I told him that he could be my guest today. His fingers are too fat and greasy to type on the keyboard, so I'll type for him. I'm going to ask him a series of questions about truck accessories, and I'll put the answers here. Ready? Jackson: What's a truck axory?

Cleveland Mike: Not truck AXORY, it's truck accessory. A truck accessory is any aftermarket component that you add to your truck. You could add it for looks, for performance, or for economy reasons.

Jackson: E-comony?

Cleveland Mike: Yes, silly little Jackson, economy. A person can actually save money by spending money on their truck. See, if you install a tonneau cover on your truck, you will see mileage gains. The smoother airflow over the bed of the truck really cuts down on wind resistance and you get more miles for your gallon of gas. The cover pays for itself in a matter of months.

Jackson: But I wanna tipe! When do I get two?

Cleveland Mike: I already told you, bud, your little fingers are too fat. Plus you have chocolate all over them. Go ask your Mom for a wipey.

See, you don't need to buy a truck that has a ton of options. You can get most things that the dealership offers elsewhere, and at a much cheaper cost. Check it out.

You buy a new truck and it comes with floor mats. Why not remove the floor mat option (which adds $200 to your invoice) and get some high-quality custom floor mats manufactured by Lloyd. They are a full posh carpeted mat, and they're less expensive than the silly factory floor mats.

Another Day On the North Coast.

I know what you're thinking. I'm living the life here in Cleveland, right? I drive a quaint little car and live in a quaint little house on a quaint little street in the poorest major city in the United States.

Did you know that? This city is totally poor. I guess it's because the city spends my hard-earned dollars sending their maintenance crews to cut my grass down to the dirt and shred my beautiful flowers with string trimmers ("oops, sorry Mr. [Cleveland Mike], we got a report that this address was unoccupied..."). Or maybe it's because they assign a garbage truck to the West Side Market to pick up two loads of trash and the crew spends the rest of the day sleeping in the cab and reading the newspaper.

Oh well, the East and Southern coastline have hurricanes to deal with while the West coast has earthquakes. Up here, we just get snowed on. A lot. But it's better than being drowned or having the ground open up and swallow you alive.

Hey there, y'all! I'm back to talk to you about different types of truck accessories. Today, we'll be discussing protection accessories.

Not being in the truck and SUV accessory field, you may not know that there are many, many options out there. Things you probably never thought of. There are floor mats available, seat covers, and cargo trays.

As far as floor mats, there is a multitude of information available in a series of articles on Stylin' Concepts' website at StylinConcepts.com. They have an article that is a Floor Mat Buyer's Guide. There is an FAQ about floor mats. And a handy floor mat chart.

And let us not forget about replacement interior carpet. Maybe your truck or SUV needs an update inside, or the factory carpet is ruined. Here's an article about how easy it is to install new interior carpet.

Things to consider before buying a replacement grille for your truck or SUV.

Six things to consider before buying a replacement grill.

Material Matters
When searching for a billet grill, you will find that there are numerous materials to choose from. Among the most popular is billet aluminum, which offers a premium look and stands up to the elements.

Confirm that quality grade billet aluminum is used on your grill and that a chip-free powder-coating was applied. A polished finish will nicely complement your existing chrome trim.

Bar Business
Take note of the number of bars used in the grill. Rule of thumb: the more bars the better the look. Equally important, look for consistently spaced gaps between each bar. For repeatable precision, laser and water jet manufacturing processes yield the most consistent billet grill production results.

Nice Curves
Odds are there's some shape to your truck's front end. Choose a replacement grill insert that contours well to the front of your ride. Doing so will improve fit and ensure a custom finish.

Technical Foul
Face it, you want a billet grill to improve your vehicle's appearance, not junk it up. Get technical and take a look for visible welds. The right grill insert should have a seamless look.

Also, look for quality hardware components. Mounting studs should be made of steel and be rigid with clean threads. Aluminum mounts should be avoided as they can be too pliable which may increase the chance of failure. Avoid threads coated with powder or paint and not in tact, making it difficult to apply the mounting nut and complete a proper billet grill installation.

Muscle Matters
Installation "tabs" should be part of the bar support. This reduces the number of welds, reinforcing grill insert strength. Another good strength check is finding out if the billet grill's contour was cut or "rolled" into shape. Rolling or bending can potentially compromise grill strength.

Professional Help
Installation of your billet grill insert will vary by application. Methods range from simple bolt-over grill inserts to full replacements requiring factory grill removal; only few require minor cutting. When it's time to install your grill insert, know your skill level and determine if professional help is needed to ensure a quality, stress free install.

Wow, that cat Harry Potter sure has done it again! I started reading the first book, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, again this week. I figure that I'll take my time and make my way through the books before the next one comes out. It's just a great read.

The magic of your first Harry Potter experience comes crashing back to you all over again. I'm having a great time learning about Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Botts Every-Flavor Beans, Vampires, spells, charms, potions, and the wonderfully fast-paced game of Quiddich!

So...in light of current world events (World Cup, North Korea Missiles, Big Brother starting!), maybe we can go over the basics of Quiddich. I'll toss some knowledge your way and you, in turn, can - Damn! I'm writing for the wrong blog! This is a truck accessory blog, right? I logged into the wrong damn blog account - all these blog interfaces look the same!

Fact #1: I know the rules, game mechanics, strategies and history of an imaginary wizard game called Quiddich, where wizards fly around on broom sticks and try to hit each other with magical bats and balls.

Fact #2: I don't know the rules, game mechanics, strategies and history of a real-life human game called Football. But I do know trucks!

Ok, now that we've established that I'm a closet Harry Pothead fan we can get back on track. Sports never were my thing anyways. I was either reading or tinkering with my sweet ride. We've already talked enough about reading, let's talk about sweet rides!

Those jokers over at Styling Concepts have been at it again. They've got a silly grille promotion going on. Actually, I think that it starts next week, but that's neither here nor there. The point is, it's an awesome promotion.

Billet Grill or Billet Grille?

In the custom truck industry some people use the term grill and others use the term grille. What’s the difference? Truly, one isn’t better than the other, but in the automotive aftermarket, most companies use Custom Billet Grille. Usually when you are talking about a Grill, you are talking about a gas grill that you’ll cook your burgers and hotdogs on.

The funny part about all this is more people search for the term Billet Grill than Billet Grille. This can create some confusion for consumers because people who spell grille with the “E” may be missing out on the people who search for the grill spelled without the “E.”

There are a lot of ways to customize the look of your truck. Some looks come and go, while others, like a custom grille, will stand the test of time.

Whether it’s a billet grille, speed grille, or the new custom designer grilles, it makes no difference – grilles will always be in style. That is probably why it is one of the first items people upgrade on their truck. Whether you’re planning a full custom job or just want to personalize your truck a little, a custom grille will definitely make your truck stand out.

With the numerous options available for custom grilles, we know it can be hard to choose. Knowing the tough decision you face, we’ll be highlighting different types of grilles so you can become familiar with the unique look each one gives your truck or SUV.

Let’s start with a basic question, “What is a billet grille?” There are two parts to answering this question. One is the general understanding of what “billet grille” means today, and the other is where the billet grille got its roots. A billet grille, just like a billet wheel, was originally designed to be constructed from a solid block of billet. All “true” billet pieces are crafted by removing unnecessary material from the original block of billet material, leaving behind the desired design. For the simpler modern definition, a billet grille can be defined as a grille with horizontal bars. The bars can run in-between the headlights, or in the case of a “phantom grille,” they run across the headlight.

Recently, vertical billet grilles were introduced to the custom truck world, giving you yet another variation of the classic look. These grilles have the same great looks of the horizontal grilles, but the bars run up and down, or vertical to the ground.

Billet grilles have been around since the first custom truck was built. Today, if you attend a show, you will see hundreds of different grille designs, styles and finishes. Billet grilles come in brushed, polished, black, chrome and stainless.

Billet grilles come in two styles of installation. They can bolt-over your existing grille for fast, easy installation & removal; or they come in cut-out style, where you remove the current grille inserts and replace it with the much more stylish billet grille. Both styles give you a great look; the cut-out style takes a little longer to install, but is the ultimate in clean-looks when it is finished.

Today we will define a few different truck accessories available on the market today.

Billet grills are replacment grille inserts for the front of your truck or SUV. Most are made of aluminum and the design features thin bars that run horizontally across your grille opening. The look is smooth, seamless and sexy. Ok, maybe it's not sexy exactly, but your truck will look awesome!

Usually, they come in a polished finish, which is a shiny, mirror-like look. It's very close to chrome, but less expensive. Also, some bolt onto the front of your truck, and some require that you cut your factory grill out.

Nerf Bars are another great truck accessory that you can get.

Nerf bars are tubular-designed steps that bolt along the bottom edge of your truck or SUV, right underneath the doors. They usually have a shiny chrome finish and feature plastic steps. They also go by the name: Tube Steps, Step Rails, Nerf Bars, or Step Bars.
